I joined Neocities back in March 2023 because it felt like I was losing my mind to social media. I romanticized the idea of disconnecting from the Internet entirely (I wanted a flip phone sooo bad), but after thinking about it for more than two seconds, I realized that’s pretty much impossible in today’s world. Ironically, I heard about Neocities through TikTok, and spending my time building my own website seemed much more appealing than clogging my brain with junk and losing my attention span. I could feel pretentious about learning a new skill (“coding” was still sort of buzzy, then) and not feel as guilty about my time management while still maintaining a presence online.
Since then, Mygrain has gone through many phases. I was a bit overzealous at first while learning the basics and chose a very involved claymation style. A couple of months later, I went to work on a mountain for the entire summer, which meant me enjoying my time outdoors as much as possible (and a tragic wifi connection, besides). Consequently, I neglected Mygrain and forgot everything I knew about HTML. On December 18, I started fresh with a poor excuse for a dark fantasy aesthetic. In May 2024, I began changing Mygrain into its current toybox theme.
I’m an unoriginal stinker! I stole it from a bumper/commercial I saw while watching uploads of MTV’s Singled Out (hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy) on YouTube. That show is so stupid and great. I thought “Mygrain” reflected my view of coding: something precious that comes with difficulties. My grain and a migraine, if you will.
